Your forklift is an essential part of your work day and you need it to perform its best. With proper maintenance and servicing, you can get optimal use each time you operate. Our team at KMC Forklift has put together a few tips to help you maintain your equipment and keep it running for years to come.

Maintain a Schedule

A big part of forklift maintenance is following a schedule to complete repair tasks. To start with, you should have your equipment routinely inspected and create a schedule based on the findings. Factors at play will include the age of the machine based on operating hours, its mechanical condition, any previous damage, and its existing service history.

Daily Service

Before and after operation, you should perform a routine inspection. Check for any indications of leaks, loss of tire pressure, loose hose connections, and damage. While the forklift is running, do a quick check that the accelerator, brakes, and steering are all working correctly.

Electric lifts will require a few additional tasks: check cables, battery restraints, electrolyte levels, and the hood latch.

Liquid propane lifts will require these additional tasks: check the propane tank, pressure relief valve, and restraint brackets.

You should also make sure that your forklift is being maintained for cleanliness each day! Remove all personal items and disinfect as needed.

Monthly Service

Monthly maintenance tasks should equate to roughly every 230 hours of service. Be diligent with this service checklist because it can help prevent major issues.

Inspect for any structural damage, lubricate the chassis, change the engine oil and filter, inspect belts, test the function of the lift, tilt and cylinder, and check engine function. If you operate an electric lift, check that the battery is able to hold an adequate charge.

Yearly Service

Throughout the year you should perform more in-depth inspections and repairs. In some cases, the yearly inspection should be completed by certified professionals, like our service department team.

Thoroughly examine the machine for any damage to the forklift’s key operating components, including pedals, hoses, and lift. Replace all fluids and complete a deep clean of all elements. You should also perform a magnetic particle test, torque the manifold nuts and engine bolts, and adjust any bearings.

Utilize the Manual

The best way to maintain your equipment is to refer to the owner’s manual. The information provided will be the ultimate guideline for proper upkeep and maintenance of your forklift! Pay attention to recommended oil and fluid types, operating hours, and standard protocols.

Forklifts are amazing tools that add efficiency to your work day, but it’s crucial to stay on top of service so you enjoy the best performance.
