If you need a forklift, buying a used model is a great way to save some money while still getting the equipment you need to make transporting pallets and cargo easier. It’s important to inspect any used forklift that catches your eye, though, so that you can determine whether it was properly taken care of by the previous owner. Here’s what to inspect on a used forklift you want to buy.

Examine Forks

The forks are, of course, one of the most vital parts of a forklift, since they are the platform upon which cargo is transported. Examine each fork to make sure they aren’t bent or cracked, which could require replacement. Look at the fork blade’s heel to make sure that it’s as thick as the upright fork shank; if it’s too thin, this could also indicate the need for replacement.

Inspect Engine

Your forklift’s engine needs to be in peak condition. Starting up the engine and allowing it to run for a few minutes will allow you to watch for any smoke or listen for strange sounds. Check the engine oil to make sure it is clean and topped off. Examine the hoses for signs of leakage and make sure the belts are properly lubricated and tightened.

Watch For Leaks

Any pooling fluids around your forklift are a bad sign. You should make sure that the radiator, mast cylinders, and transmission are all free of leaks because a leak is a sign that major repairs are necessary.
